A Harvest of Hope: How a Young Farmer Redefined Success in Assam's Dergaon

As the New Year begins, an inspiring story of determination and hope emerges from Dubigaon village in Golaghat district’s Dergaon, where a young farmer has turned hardship into a journey of success through agriculture.

Sahabuddin Ahmed, engaged in farming for the last 15 years, has transformed nearly 52 bighas of land into a flourishing agricultural hub. Through his relentless effort and dedication, he has not only achieved financial self-reliance but has also created employment opportunities for around 35 families, becoming a pillar of support for the local rural economy.

What began as a response to financial hardship soon turned into a mission.

Accepting poverty as a challenge, Sahabuddin chose agriculture as his path forward—and today, he stands as a completely successful farmer. His farm reflects diversity and sustainable practices, with vast fields producing cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, along with various seasonal crops.

For Sahabuddin, farming goes beyond livelihood. He treats his crops like his own children, nurturing them with care and patience. The well-maintained fields present a soothing sight, symbolising the rewards of honest labour. A few months ago, his cultivation of pumpkin and bottle gourd alone earned him a profit exceeding ₹5 lakh, further strengthening his position as a progressive farmer.

Speaking about his journey, Sahabuddin Ahmed said, “I have been involved in agriculture for the last 15 years. Despite having the option to pursue other social work, I chose farming after witnessing poverty closely in my life. Nature never betrays you. Sometimes production may be less, but it will always give you a return. Life gains real meaning only when we do something for others.”

Today, Sahabuddin Ahmed’s agricultural venture stands as a thriving and sustainable enterprise, offering inspiration to countless young people who wish to take up farming as a profession.

As 2026 begins, his story serves as a reminder that with perseverance, faith in nature, and hard work, agriculture can become a powerful tool for transformation and social upliftment.
