A Match Lost, Many Injured: What Went So Terribly Wrong at Cotton University?

Guwahati: A violent clash between students of Swahid Ranjit Barpuzari (SRB) and Seeta Nath Brahma Choudhury (SNBC) hostels was reported once again at Cotton University, Guwahati, during the ongoing Sports Week celebrations, leaving several students seriously injured.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred following a football match, allegedly triggered by SNBC Hostel students’ defeat in the game. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which senior students of SRB Hostel allegedly attacked junior students of SNBC Hostel.

Sources alleged that sharp weapons (machete) were used in the assault. At least four junior students of SNBC Hostel sustained grievous injuries, while another student was also reported injured.

The injured students have been identified as Rituraj Kalita, Abhijit Gogoi, Prachurjya Das, Bhargav Pratim Rajkhuwa, and Mokibul Islam. All the injured students were rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where their condition is stated to be critical.

The accused students from SRB Hostel have been identified as Kaushik Chutia, Jintu Das, Deep Boro, Paramjit Deka, Debanga Raj Nath, Bhairab Kakoti, Sushankar Mandal, Debashish Barman, Abhishek Chetri, Gupo Krishna, and Bishal Kumar. Among them, Paramjit Deka, Deep Boro, Bishal Kumar, Jintu Das, and Kaushik Chutia are alleged to have directly carried out the attack using sharp weapons.

The incident has sparked panic and tension on the Cotton University campus.

The Guwahati police have launched an investigation into the matter, and further action is expected against those involved.

The university authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
