The bail was approved as government lawyers reportedly failed to effectively challenge the defence’s arguments during the hearing.AdvertismentAccording to reports, Bora was taken into custody by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell at around 8 p.m. — a violation of legal norms that prohibit the arrest of women at night without the permission of a First Class Magistrate. The court noted this irregularity while granting her bail. The case against her (No. 25/2025) was registered under Sections 47 and 48 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).Bora’s arrest came after a series of raids conducted at multiple locations connected to her. Vigilance officials recovered ₹92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth nearly ₹1 crore from her residence in Guwahati. An additional ₹10 lakh was seized from her rented house in Barpeta. Searches were also carried out at the home of Surajit Deka, a Lat Mandal in the Barpeta Revenue Circle Office and a close associate of Barua, over allegations that the duo had amassed several land properties during her tenure in the district.The 35-year-old officer was serving as Circle Officer of Goroimari in Kamrup district. She was arrested after months of investigation into alleged irregularities in land transactions. Bora joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019 and began her career as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong.
