"Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday escalated his confrontation with the Congress, announcing that he would disclose what he described as “serious and dangerous information” about Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on February 8, backed by what he claimed would be “full evidence.”Advertisment Speaking to the media, Sarma said attempts were already underway to defame him ahead of the disclosure but asserted that such efforts would fail. “Before February 8, they will surely try to tarnish my image among the people. But this is not new for me. I have been hearing such allegations since the early phase of my political career in 1996,” the Chief Minister said. Sarma announced that on February 9, he would file both civil and criminal defamation cases against senior Congress leaders, challenging them to prove their allegations in court. “I did not commit any crime. If giving jobs to 1.5 lakh youths without taking a single rupee is a crime, if providing Orunodoi benefits to over 40 lakh women is a crime, if supporting 32 lakh women under the Mahila Udyamita scheme is a crime, and if development over the last five years is a crime—then I have nothing more to say,” he remarked. Sharp Attack on Congress, "Natun Bor Axom" Debate Launching a sharp political attack, Sarma accused Congress leaders of conspiring against Assam"s interests. “These are people who want to sell Assam. Their party is desperate and directionless,” he alleged, questioning the Congress slogan "Natun Bor Axom" and asking whether the public was not watching their actions closely. The Chief Minister also credited his government with stopping rhino poaching and questioned the Congress" stance on issues related to the Miya community. “The illegal works committed by them will receive a befitting reply from the people of Assam after the elections,” Sarma said. Taking a swipe at the Congress" digital outreach, Sarma said the party was out of touch with changing times. “Who watches websites nowadays? People have shifted to mobile apps. The era of websites is over. Now it"s the age of Artificial Intelligence. Congress leaders don"t understand where society is heading,” he said. Explosive Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi Reiterating his February 8 announcement, Sarma alleged that individuals associated with Gaurav Gogoi posed a threat to Assam. “There is a person close to Gaurav Gogoi who wrote a book claiming that Assamese people are foreigners and Miya are the original citizens. Rajiv Bhawan has become a hub of conspiracy where anti-Assam activities are being planned,” he claimed. In one of his most controversial remarks, Sarma alleged that members of Gogoi"s family held bank accounts in Pakistan. “Ask Gaurav Gogoi how many bank accounts his family has in Pakistan. A family member has an active bank account in the neighbouring country,” the Chief Minister alleged. Congress Hits Back With Corruption Allegations Sarma"s remarks come a day after the Congress held a high-profile press conference accusing the Chief Minister of corruption and illegal land acquisition. Earlier on Wednesday, Sarma announced via social media that he would initiate legal action on February 9, 2026, against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh Alwar, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi and Debabrata Saikia for what he termed “false, malicious and defamatory” statements. “I will not be intimidated by coordinated political slander. I will respond firmly through the courts,” Sarma posted. At the Congress press briefing, Gaurav Gogoi alleged that Sarma and his family had amassed vast tracts of land over the years. “We don"t yet know the full scale of Himanta Biswa Sarma"s land holdings. Around 12,000 bighas may have been acquired in the names of his family members,” Gogoi claimed. He also announced the launch of a public portal inviting citizens to submit information regarding the alleged land acquisitions, stating that if proven, the land would be redistributed among the poor. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia accused the Chief Minister of irregularities in the Public Works Department, while Congress in-charge Jitendra Singh Alwar alleged betrayal of public trust. Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, along with senior leaders Rakibul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi, were present at the briefing. As Assam heads toward elections, the political temperature continues to rise, with both sides preparing for a high-stakes legal and political battle in the days ahead.
