Assam Cabinet Greenlights ₹3,217 Crore Road, FIFA-Level Stadium Projects

The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, met today to announce a series of key decisions aimed at boosting infrastructure, sports, environmental conservation, and cultural activities across the state.

Infrastructure Development

The Cabinet approved the third phase of the “Asom Mala” road development project, which includes the construction of 883 km of two-lane roads at an estimated cost of ₹3,217 crore.

In sports infrastructure, the redevelopment of Nehru Stadium in Guwahati into a FIFA- and Olympic-level football stadium was approved, with a sanctioned budget of ₹765 crore. The project tender has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro.

The government also sanctioned the creation of a new reserve forest covering 9.04 hectares at Ledu Namdang, reinforcing its commitment to environmental conservation.

Policy Decisions

A new Water Resources Department policy was discussed to prevent legal disputes arising from embankment construction. The policy ensures that once embankments are built at public demand, future claims for land acquisition compensation will be regulated to protect the department from litigation.

Holidays and Employee Benefits

The Cabinet approved the gazetted holiday list for 2026, which includes:

• 35 gazetted holidays

• 49 restricted holidays

• 1 half-day holiday

• 19 holidays under the NIA Act

• Second and fourth Saturdays as holidays

Additionally, the annual leave schedule for State Government employees for Pitri-Matri Vandana 2026 was finalized. Employees can choose to avail leave from July 9–12 or July 23–26, allowing for advance planning for travel and ticket bookings.
