Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday filed a defamation case seeking ₹500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Debabrata Saikia for allegedly making false and malicious claims against him during a press conference on February 4.

Taking to his official X handle, CM Sarma stated, “Today, I have filed a defamation case seeking ₹500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference.”

Notably, CM Sarma in his previous tweet said that he would not be intimidated by “propaganda, coordinated slander, or political theatrics of so-called slaves of the Gandhi family.”

The legal action comes in response to a sharp political offensive launched by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on February 4, under the banner “Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?” at Rajiv Bhawan, Guwahati. The event, attended by senior Congress leaders including former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh, and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, aimed to expose what the Congress described as the “real face” of the Chief Minister.

The launch included a video titled “Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?” and a QR-code-enabled public template designed to make allegations of misconduct by the Chief Minister accessible to citizens. Congress leaders accused Sarma of being authoritarian, corrupt, deceitful to ethnic communities, a habitual political turncoat, and of disrespecting Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

Key Allegations by Congress Leaders:

  • Gaurav Gogoi alleged that CM Sarma and his family acquired vast tracts of land in Assam in violation of rules, including converting agricultural land for industrial purposes. He said a special Congress team is verifying land holdings and urged the public to provide credible information via a dedicated website, whoishbs.com, and phone number 9133400200. Gogoi claimed preliminary investigations suggest nearly 12,000 bighas of land have been acquired illegally.

  • Bhupesh Baghel called Sarma a “master conman” running a “loot network” in Assam with his wife under political protection from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Baghel drew international parallels, referencing the Epstein files, and alleged that Sarma was compromising Assam’s interests for personal gain.

  • Jitendra Singh alleged that Sarma and his family acquired 12,000 bighas of land and floated 17 companies, while handing over over 40,000 bighas of land to corporate entities like Adani, Ambani, and Patanjali. He accused Sarma of betraying political mentors, imposing unofficial “HBS taxes,” and being involved in multiple scams, including the Louis Berger case, Saradha scam, PM Sampada irregularities, and corruption in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.

  • Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition, claimed Sarma’s public statements could not hide the “truth” and accused him of failing as a minister over 25 years, facilitating corruption in the Public Works Department, and misusing the Citizenship Amendment Act.

At the same press conference, responding to claims about alleged Pakistan links, Gogoi questioned why no concrete action had been taken despite repeated assertions since September. He also criticized Sarma for not requesting Prime Minister Modi to pay respects to Zubeen Garg or his family during his visits to Assam.
