According to sources, the accused had married a young woman from the Chandrapur Tea Garden area on 4 December, allegedly by using a false identity. Locals claimed that the gold ornaments given to the bride during the marriage and the court marriage documents were later found to be fake, triggering anger among residents.

The situation escalated further when it came to light that the man had allegedly married five women, each time posing as a doctor. Enraged locals accused him of being a fraudster impersonating a medical professional, rather than a genuine doctor.

The accused has been identified as Anil Bhagawati, a resident of Hajo. During preliminary inquiries, shocking details emerged suggesting that the man used multiple identities. Police reportedly recovered five different identity cards bearing different names from his wallet.

According to one of the recovered identity cards, the man identified himself as Dr Anil Kumar Bhagawati, serving as a Medical and Health Officer (AYUSH) in Meghalaya. Another identity card named him as Dr Techi John Methio, also listed as a Medical and Health Officer (AYUSH) in Meghalaya. Additionally, one voter ID card bore the name Anil Bhagawati, while another voter ID card mentioned Techi John Methio, further deepening suspicions of large-scale identity fraud.

Following the incident, Pragjyotishpur Police arrived at the scene and detained the accused to prevent further escalation. An investigation is currently underway to verify his identity, professional credentials, and the allegations of multiple marriages and document forgery.

Police officials stated that further legal action would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe.
