Assam: Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Receives Overwhelming Passenger Response

Guwahati: The newly launched Howrah–Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has garnered an exceptional response from passengers, signalling a major boost to long-distance travel and tourism between South Bengal and the Northeast.

The premium train, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 17 January 2026, has quickly emerged as one of the most sought-after overnight rail services in the region.

According to an official statement, the train began its commercial operations from Howrah on 23 January and from Kamakhya on 22 January. Within just a week of service, it has recorded extraordinary booking trends, with occupancy consistently surpassing full capacity.

The data shows that between 23 and 29 January 2026, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express registered an average occupancy of 128%. Bookings for subsequent days up to 3 February have already crossed the 100% mark, and officials expect the numbers to rise further.

On 30 January alone, the train's overall occupancy exceeded 117%. AC First Class saw an impressive 133% booking, followed by 116% in AC 2-Tier and 117% in AC 3-Tier, indicating strong demand across all categories.

Railway officials said the trend reflects passengers’ growing preference for premium comfort, faster travel, and superior onboard experience. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express features enhanced cushioning, cosy sleeper berths, advanced suspension systems, and reduced travel time, making it a preferred option over traditional trains and even road travel.

The surge in demand also highlights the route’s tourism potential, with travellers from South Bengal increasingly opting for the service to visit the Himalayan belt of North Bengal as well as major destinations across Assam.

With its high-speed capability, refined interiors, and focus on comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is quickly redefining overnight rail travel in the eastern and northeastern regions of India.
