Assam: HS Final Year Student Found Dead in Titabor Girls’ Hostel, Suicide Suspected

A Higher Secondary year student was found dead just a day before the final examination at a hostel in Titabor of Jorhat, Assam.

As per reports, the student was found dead hanging from a ceiling in her hostel on Monday night.

The deceased student was identified as Laxmi Karmakar from Kalyanpur in Merapani of Golaghat district. She was a student of Pragjyotika Academy in Titabor and was residing in the girls’ hostel.

According to the girl's family, the incident occurred around 11 pm, when the student allegedly took the extreme step by hanging herself from the ceiling fan inside the hostel study room.

A handwritten note reading “SORRY PAPA” was found on the study table.

The incident came to light when fellow students heard a scream from the room. At the time, around 20 students, who were scheduled to appear for the Higher Secondary final examinations beginning Wednesday, were studying in their individual rooms after dinner. On rushing to the room, they found the student hanging from the fan.

Titabor police, following the reporting of the incident, reached the spot the same night. The body was recovered after legal procedures and was sent to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on Wednesday morning for post-mortem examination.

The victim’s father stated, "The institution contacted him around 12 am and informed him that a serious incident had occurred involving his daughter, asking him to come to the institute immediately. He alleged that when he sought further details, he was later informed that his daughter had died by suicide. He further claimed that the institution did not take the matter seriously."

After the incident, parents of the other 42 students residing in the same hostel arrived at the institution and took them back home as a precautionary measure.
