Assam: Mother and child end lives after alleged domestic abuse in Golaghat

A devastating incident has shaken the Charingia area of Golaghat district, where a young mother ended her life along with her three-year-old son by jumping into a pond.

According to reports, the woman tied her child to her chest before taking the drastic step. Preliminary investigations suggest that she was driven to the act after being unable to bear the alleged torture and harassment from her in-laws.

Local residents recovered the lifeless bodies of the mother and child from the pond and immediately informed the authorities. Following the recovery, widespread outrage has erupted in the area, with residents demanding strict punishment for the woman’s mother-in-law, identified as Abanti Hazarika.

The victim’s husband has reportedly admitted that there were frequent quarrels between his wife and mother, adding to suspicions of ongoing domestic discord.

Tension continues to prevail in Charingia following the tragic event. Meanwhile, a magistrate, along with officials from Dhekial and Golaghat Police, arrived at the scene and sent both bodies to Golaghat for post-mortem examination.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and further details are awaited.
