Assam: Senior ACS Officer in Mankachar faces sexual harassment allegations

A senior Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer has landed in controversy once again, this time facing grave allegations of sexual harassment.

Partha Pratim Barman, Circle Officer of South Salmara-Mankachar district, has been accused by a young woman of subjecting her to repeated harassment under the false pretext of marriage.

The matter came to light on Monday morning after a heated argument reportedly broke out between the woman and the officer at the Circle Officer’s office in Mankachar. Following the confrontation, the complainant submitted a written complaint addressed to Minister Keshab Mahanta, as well as the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of South Salmara-Mankachar district.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Barman, while assuring her of marriage and claiming he would divorce his wife, Debasena Barman (ACS, Assistant Commissioner, Golakganj CDC), engaged in a physical relationship with her on multiple occasions. However, she said those assurances proved to be false.

The woman further alleged that since August 21, 2025, both Barman and his wife have been issuing threats of intimidation, harassment, and character assassination against her. She has appealed for strict disciplinary action against the officer.

The accusations have triggered widespread debate and discussion across Mankachar, with residents closely following the developments. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
