‘Assam’s Sole Protector Is a Myth’: AJP Leader Accuses CM of Playing Hindu-Muslim Politics

Targeting the Chief Minister personally, Gogoi alleged that Sarma had built his political career in the Congress and later joined the BJP out of fear of legal action

Guwahati: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Tuesday strongly criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent remarks, accusing the CM of indulging in communal polarisation to divert attention from governance failures and unresolved issues related to illegal immigration.

Reacting to Sarma’s comment that Gogoi represents a form of regionalism that “compromises with Miya elements,” the AJP leader questioned the Chief Minister’s commitment to the Constitution.

“We believe in the Constitution. The Chief Minister must clarify whether he does,” Gogoi said.

Reiterating his party’s stand on illegal immigration, Gogoi said that regional forces in Assam have consistently demanded the identification and deportation of foreigners while ensuring dignity for indigenous communities. He accused the BJP-led government of contradicting this position by implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which, he claimed, legitimised illegal migrants.

According to Gogoi, instead of deporting foreigners, the government has effectively extended the burden of the issue by another 53 years.

The AJP leader alleged that the Chief Minister projects himself as Assam’s sole protector against illegal immigration while simultaneously practising divisive politics. He accused CM Sarma of promoting Hindu-Muslim polarisation to distract the public from issues such as inflation, rising debt, and unemployment.

Listing governance failures, Gogoi said the government has failed to control price rise and claimed that Assam’s debt has reached ₹2.16 lakh crore. He further alleged that the state government has not implemented the clause six of the Assam Accord, failed to improve irrigation infrastructure, and did not fulfil its promise of making Assam one of the country’s top five states.

Targeting the Chief Minister personally, Gogoi alleged that Sarma had built his political career in the Congress and later joined the BJP out of fear of legal action. He also accused the CM of protecting “foreigners” while carrying out eviction drives that, he claimed, have displaced indigenous people.

Commenting on All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal, Gogoi alleged that Ajmal operates with the tacit support of the ruling establishment. He claimed that without cooperation from Dispur and the Centre, Ajmal would not be able to conduct his political and business activities freely. He further alleged that the BJP depends on communal polarisation involving Ajmal to secure electoral victories.

Raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Gogoi alleged that the government is manipulating the voter list by enrolling large numbers of outsiders. He claimed that BJP leaders have openly urged supporters to capture votes from non-BJP voters.

On the issue of constituency delimitation and elections, Gogoi said opposition unity is essential and alleged that the BJP is pushing for early elections, possibly before Bihu, to avoid public backlash over unresolved cultural and political issues, including a controversy involving singer Zubeen Garg.

Gogoi also accused the Chief Minister of misusing public funds, alleging that a new Chief Minister’s office is being constructed in North Guwahati despite an existing office in Dispur. He claimed this signals an attempt to gradually shift the state capital.

The Assam government has not responded to Gogoi’s allegations at the time of filing this report.
