"Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday attended the 10th Mising Youth Festival held at Kareng Chapori near Bogibeel in Assam"s Dhemaji district. The event marked the concluding day of the festival, with Shah arriving at the venue after completing his scheduled engagements in Dibrugarh earlier in the day.Advertisment The programme was attended by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, along with other senior leaders. Addressing the gathering, Shah praised the Mising Youth Festival, stating that anyone who did not attend the festival would be deprived of witnessing one of life"s most beautiful sights. He described the Mising community as the “protectors of the Brahmaputra”, highlighting their historical and cultural role in Assam. Attack on Congress, Assurances to Mising Community The Union Home Minister also targeted the Congress, recalling the delay in completion of the Bogibeel Bridge during the tenure of the Dr Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. He alleged that illegal infiltration had intensified during the Congress regime, impacting several districts of Assam. “Built through the hard work of the Mising community, the Bogibeel Bridge has today emerged as a symbol of New India across the world. After the Congress government failed to complete the project, the people of this region placed their trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the BJP-led government went on to finish the bridge within just four years,” Shah said. From the stage, Shah paid obeisance to Malinithan and paid tribute to Quit India Movement freedom fighter Kamala Miri, acknowledging the sacrifices of the Mising community. Announcing key assurances, Shah said the Centre would constitute a monitoring committee/interlocutor to address the long-pending demands of the Mising community. He also assured recruitment opportunities for Mising youths in the Central Paramilitary Forces, including special provisions for young men and women. Shah alleged that demographic changes had taken place due to illegal infiltration in Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta, Dhubri, Morigaon and Darrang districts. He asserted that to permanently stop infiltration and drive out illegal immigrants, the BJP must be returned to power, adding that under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma"s leadership, Assam is committed to becoming infiltration-free.The Union Home Minister appealed to the Mising youth to support the BJP once again and urged the gathering to vote for the party"s lotus symbol, even administering a symbolic pledge. 2026 Poll Pitch, CM"s Announcements Shah also announced from the dais that the next Assam Assembly elections would be fought under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, making the declaration with Sarbananda Sonowal seated alongside him. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a ₹100 crore grant for the Mising Youth Festival at Kareng Chapori, reaffirming the state government"s support for indigenous culture. He also declared an additional ₹10 crore grant for the overall socio-economic and cultural development of the Donyi-Polo Mising community. Referring to Assam"s history, Sarma reiterated that during the Battle of Saraighat, Lachit Borphukan was accompanied by Miri Handique, rejecting the narrative around the presence of Bagh Hazarika. He announced that Assam"s school curriculum would be revised to include the heroic contributions of Miri Handique. ₹1,715-Crore Development Push in Assam Earlier in the day, Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth ₹1,715 crore across Assam, underlining the BJP-led government"s focus on infrastructure expansion and political consolidation ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.This marked Shah"s second visit to Assam since December 29, as the ruling BJP intensifies efforts to retain power in the state for a third consecutive term. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Shah at Dibrugarh airport late Thursday night, later posting on X, “Honoured to welcome Adarniya @AmitShah ji at Dibrugarh airport.” Dibrugarh Emerges as Second Administrative Hub Beginning his day in Dibrugarh, Shah inaugurated the ₹284-crore second MLA complex and hostel, a key project under the Assam government"s plan to develop Dibrugarh as the state"s second administrative capital. The complex has been built over 250 acres.He also inaugurated the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex constructed at a cost of ₹238 crore and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, estimated at ₹209 crore. Further strengthening Assam"s environmental infrastructure, Shah laid the foundation stone for a ₹292-crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre and launched a ₹692-crore project for the restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands across the state.
