At a press conference in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi criticised the Congress for including Imran Masood in its screening committee for the upcoming Assembly elections. Masood is in Assam alongside Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is leading the candidate selection exercise.

Medhi alleged that the Congress had entrusted a “controversial figure” with a key organisational responsibility in Assam and claimed that the move reflected the party’s political strategy ahead of the polls. He further accused the party leadership of attempting to influence the State’s political landscape through external leadership involvement.

The BJP spokesperson also referred to past statements and controversies linked to Masood, arguing that his inclusion in the screening process would raise concerns among voters in Assam. He said the party would highlight the issue during the election campaign.

The Congress has not issued any detailed response to the allegations so far, but party leaders have maintained that the screening exercise is an internal organisational process aimed at identifying candidates through consultations at various levels.

Masood, a Congress leader from Uttar Pradesh, is part of the party’s committee tasked with reviewing potential candidates and gathering feedback from district and grassroots units as the State heads toward Assembly elections.
