"GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the under-construction Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge to review the progress of the project. The Chief Minister inspected the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, which is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14.Advertisment During the inspection, the Chief Minister personally drove across the bridge and assessed the construction status. He stated that the bridge would soon be opened for pedestrians, while vehicular traffic would be allowed after March 1. According to the plan, the bridge will remain open for public access until March 1, after which it will be fully operational for vehicles. The bridge, whose foundation stone was laid on February 9, 2019, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati. Officials said the crossing can be completed in just seven minutes, offering faster connectivity and improved urban mobility. Chief Minister Sarma also said that toll charges for buses and trucks would be increased, adding that the toll rates would be kept high enough to discourage heavy commercial vehicles from using the bridge. He further revealed that the government is considering the construction of a dedicated cycle track for public convenience. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on February 14 to inaugurate the bridge. The Prime Minister will inspect the central portion of the bridge and enjoy the panoramic view during his visit. On the political front, Chief Minister Sarma commented on alleged conspiracy claims involving Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, referring to the organisation “Inclusive Minds.” He alleged that Congress leaders were unaware of the issue, but said that there was a “smell of conspiracy” originating from Bengaluru, adding that an investigation is underway. The Chief Minister also took a swipe at Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi over his remarks opposing river dam projects. He said once a project is initiated, it cannot be stopped midway and noted that Assam is already benefiting from electricity generated by such projects.
