Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Mira Borthakur on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Assam government and the Election Commission, alleging large-scale manipulation under the guise of “Special Revision (SR)” and e-KYC verification, aimed at systematically deleting voters’ names ahead of the elections.

Addressing a press conference here in Guwahati, Borthakur said that a comprehensive mass movement is now inevitable unless the alleged irregularities are immediately stopped.

“There is no alternative left but to launch an all-out agitation over the SR-related manipulation. The people will come out on the streets. Even BJP supporters should join the protest,” she asserted.

6,000 Names Deleted in Dispur Under e-KYC: Congress

Borthakur alleged that around 6,000 voters’ names were deleted in Dispur alone in the name of e-KYC verification, calling it a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters.

She further claimed that ration shop dealers are being officially pressured to facilitate name deletions, exposing what she termed a “coordinated strategy” between the administration and the ruling party.

‘Election Commission Acting Like BJP’s Front Organisation’

The Congress leader accused the Election Commission of functioning like a BJP frontal organisation, instead of acting as an independent constitutional authority.

“What is unfolding in Assam resembles the Bihar model of vote theft,” she said, alleging that a new network of voter manipulation is being executed through e-KYC under SR.

According to the Congress, areas where BJP traditionally receives fewer votes have witnessed deletion of 8,000 to 10,000 names per constituency, raising serious concerns over electoral fairness.

Question Raised Over Dilip Saikia VC Case

Borthakur cited the example of Dilip Saikia’s (Virtual Meeting) which was earlier raised by Raijor Dal cheif Akhil Gogoi and questioned why the Election Commission has not initiated any action in the matter.

“Why has the Election Commission remained silent on the Dilip Saikia virtual meeting case, and why has it neither taken suo motu cognisance nor questioned him on the matter so far?” she asked.

Ration Shops Allegedly Used as Tools for Vote Deletion

She claimed that fair price shop owners themselves have informed Congress leaders about the government’s alleged plan to use them as instruments for voter suppression.

According to the allegations, the strategy involves:

•    First removing names from ration cards, and
•    Subsequently deleting 6,000 to 8,000 voter names per constituency from the electoral rolls.

Congress Confident, Targets 100 Seats

On the political front, Borthakur said the Congress is preparing to contest 100 Assembly seats, adding that APCC President Gaurav Gogoi has taken the decision after careful deliberation.

Responding to concerns raised by Akhil Gogoi, she stated that Congress is currently very strong at the booth level, and well-positioned for the electoral battle.

“This election is about delivering results. It is not an election where risks can be taken,” she said.

Dispur Seat: Congress Yet to Decide

On the Dispur constituency, Borthakur noted that Raijor Dal is keen to project Ramen Borthakur, acknowledging that every party considers itself strong in elections.

“All aspects will be considered by the party before taking a final call,” she added.
