GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur on Wednesday found herself at the centre of a controversy after a post circulated on social media from a profile named “Priyakhi Duarah New”. The post, which appeared to be a screenshot with text on a red background, was falsely attributed to Borthakur.

The text claimed that Mira Borthakur had spoken favourably about Gyanshree Bora, stating that she had known her for a long time, that her voice was strong, and that the Congress might consider giving up the Khumtai constituency to Raijor Dal in the interest of alliance politics. It also suggested that since the party’s working president Roselina Tirkey had lost earlier, Gyanshree Bora could be given a chance.

However, Borthakur strongly denied making any such statement. Reacting to the viral post, she said:

“People should see how weak the BJP has become. They are spreading blatant misinformation in our name. I am not from DY365—where and when did I ever speak about Gyanshree Bora? Give me one clear reference. The headmaster is lying, and so are his students. People must stay alert while there is still time. Today, government schools are being shut down and such institutions are being promoted—places where falsehoods are sold as truth. Beware of fake news.”

Following the clarification, the social media profile Priyakhi Duarah New reportedly deleted the post. However, it has since resurfaced, with allegations that the account is being operated by an IT cell linked to a particular political party.

Meanwhile, Gyanshree Bora, the Women’s Wing President of Raijor Dal, is currently appointed as an Assistant Professor at Goalpara College. Recent discussions on social media have pointed out that she had earlier left politics to take up her academic position, and is now reportedly returning to active politics.

It is to be noted that this has triggered speculation over whether Gyanshree Bora will resign from her post as Assistant Professor to contest elections. The possibility of her formally re-entering electoral politics has now become a subject of public debate.
