Earthquake of Magnitude 4.4 Hits Assam, Tremors Felt in Parts of Bhutan

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Assam on Saturday evening at around 6:12:48 pm (IST), triggering tremors across several parts of the state and some regions of neighbouring Bhutan.

According to preliminary data, the earthquake originated in Udalguri district of Assam, with the epicentre located at 26.72°N latitude and 92.31°E longitude, at a depth of 10 km. The shallow depth caused tremors to be felt across a wide area.

The tremors were reported from Jamugurihat, Nagaon, Morigaon, Tezpur, Juria, Rangapara, Barhampur, and surrounding areas, causing brief panic among residents, with many stepping out of their homes as a precaution.

Parts of neighbouring Bhutan also experienced the tremors, however, no damage or casualties have been reported so far.

As per initial inputs, Middle Assam and Lower Assam felt the earthquake, while no tremors have been reported from Upper Assam till the filing of this report.

The concerned district authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited.
