Holi Turns Violent in Guwahati: Youth Allegedly Kills Father, Separate Stabbing Near ISBT

GUWAHATI: Guwahati reported two separate incidents of violence on Wednesday amid Holi celebrations, including an alleged patricide in the Super Market area and a stabbing near the ISBT area.

In the first incident, a 23-year-old youth, identified as Riyan Choudhury, allegedly killed his father, businessman Manish Choudhury (50), with a sharp weapon. The incident occurred at Shaheed Dilip Huzuri Path in the Super Market locality under the jurisdiction of Dispur Police.

According to Guwahati police officials, the accused surrendered after the incident and was subsequently apprehended after locals alerted the police. Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Speaking to the media, a police official said,

“The youth is an educated individual and the matter is under observation. As per our preliminary investigation, it appears that a domestic altercation was taking place between the father and the mother of the accused. During the incident, the youth allegedly attacked his father with a sharp weapon in an attempt to protect his mother.”

The police official further stated that Riyan had recently completed his engineering degree and was pursuing his M.Tech studies in Chandigarh. However, they clarified that the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal attack is yet to be officially established.

A forensic team, along with personnel from Dispur Police, has launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the crime.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident reported the same day, a man identified as Upendra Barman was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon at Azan Fakir Path near the ISBT area of Guwahati.

The accused has been identified as Ebad Hussain, a youth hailing from Lanka in Assam’s Hojai district. Police officials said that both the victim and the accused were tenants residing in the same house.

According to preliminary information shared by police, an altercation broke out between the two, which later escalated into violence. The dispute reportedly culminated in Hussain attacking Barman with a sharp weapon in what police are treating as an attempt to murder.

Police officials have taken the accused into custody, and further investigation into both incidents is currently underway.
