“Most Flop Press Conference of the Century”: Gaurav Gogoi Hits Back at Assam CM

Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday launched a sharp counterattack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, rejecting as “baseless” the allegations made against him during the latter’s recent press conference and accusing the Chief Minister of deflecting from pressing public questions.

Responding through a series of posts on social media platform X, Gogoi ridiculed the press meet, describing it as the “most flop press conference of the century” and claiming it failed to convince either journalists or the public. He said reporters from both Delhi and Assam were made to sit through what he termed an exercise built on “mindless and bogus” claims.

In his remarks, the Congress leader alleged that the Chief Minister’s presentation lacked substance and was an attempt to shift attention away from the Opposition’s ongoing campaign, #XomoyParivartanYatra. According to Gogoi, the campaign has been highlighting what he described as the alleged occupation of large tracts of land by Sarma and his family.

He further claimed that the Chief Minister had “embarrassed himself” before local and national media and insisted that the lengthy press conference did little to convince those present. “Nobody in Assam is taking his words seriously,” Gogoi asserted, reiterating his criticism of the event.

Gogoi also demanded clarity on what he alleged to be the acquisition of around 12,000 bighas — roughly 4,000 acres — of prime land across the state by the Chief Minister and his relatives. He said the issue required a detailed public explanation and accountability.

Taking his attack a step further, the Congress MP said that if his party comes to power, it would initiate steps to reclaim such land and redistribute it among the poor and landless.
