NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board conducts workshop for “Source Sustainability for Groundwater Sources”

Brahmaputra Board, the North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI) in collaboration with Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Guwahati, Assam conducted a three-day training workshop on – “Source Sustainability for Groundwater Sources”.

Under the dynamic leadership of the Dr Ranbir Singh, IAS (Retd.), Chairman, Brahmaputra Board, the North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI) in collaboration with Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Guwahati, Assam conducted a three-day training workshop on – “Source Sustainability for Groundwater Sources” during 24th-26th September, 2025.

 The program was inaugurated by Tapan Chakrabarty, Regional Director, CGWB, North Eastern Region, who emphasized the critical importance of effective groundwater source sustainability. He highlighted the role of sustainable practices in achieving efficient water resource management. The inaugural session was graced by the presence of Scientists from Central Ground Water Board and Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI, Brahmaputra Board.

The three-day program comprised comprehensive lectures on encompassing the Source Sustainability for Groundwater Sources, including Basic Hydrogeology and Artificial recharge to Groundwater for Ground water sources, SoP on source sustainability of groundwater sources, Delineation of source catchment, its drainage pattern and morphometry, Water budgeting of the source, Basic concept of spring and types of spring, with special emphasis on Springs of North East India and Development of Springshed Management Plan for source sustainability, Spring monitoring, inventory, relation with rainfall, vulnerability assessment, spring classification, Springshed rejuvenation methods  and SoP on springshed treatment measures, Water quality assessment of the source, Development of Water Quality Management Plan for the source water. The participants were also trained in hands-on sessions exercised on source sustainability.

The training program concluded with a valedictory session chaired by Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI along with the presence of Scientists from Central Ground Water Board. During the valedictory remarks Director, NEHARI emphasized the importance of “Source Sustainability for Groundwater Sources” and its direct impact on organizational performance.

A total of 18 participants from various offices of the Brahmaputra Board, Water Resource Department, Meghalaya and Public Health Engineering, Assam were awarded certificates of successful completion.
