Samar Hazarika, a celebrated Assamese singer and younger brother of legendary musician Bhupen Hazarika, passed away at 8:45 AM today at a private hospital in Guwahati.

The news has left the Assamese music fraternity and fans across the state in deep mourning.

Earlier reports had indicated that the renowned singer was critically ill. He was admitted to the ICU of Hayat Hospital, where his condition became serious after a sudden drop in oxygen levels. Although there had been a brief improvement in his health, the situation ultimately worsened, leading to his untimely demise.

Samar Hazarika was a prominent figure in Assam’s music scene, known for his melodious voice and contributions to both albums and Assamese cinema. He began his musical journey in 1960, and in 1968, he released his first album, “Uttar Konwar Pratima Barua Devi,” which earned him recognition among music enthusiasts. Apart from his album recordings and performances for All India Radio, Hazarika also lent his voice as a playback singer to several Assamese films, including Upapath, Bowari, and Prabhati Pakhi’r Gaan.

Born to Nilakanta Hazarika and Shantipriya Hazarika, Samar Hazarika was part of a family of accomplished musicians.

He is survived by his children, Dawar and Kuwali, and leaves behind the legacy of his elder brothers, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Jayanta Hazarika, both iconic figures in Assamese music.

Samar Hazarika’s passing is a profound loss to Assamese culture, and his melodious contributions will continue to resonate in the hearts of music lovers for generations to come.
