Senior Congress Spokesperson Resigns, Raises Explosive Allegations Against APCC President

GUWAHATI: In a dramatic political development, Sanju Boruah, Vice Chairman of the Assam Congress Campaign Committee 2026 and Senior Spokesperson and Executive Member of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), resigned from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress on Monday, citing grave national security concerns and a moral crisis under the present state leadership.

In a strongly worded resignation letter addressed to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Mallikarjun Kharge, Boruah said he could no longer continue in the Congress under APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, whose name has been linked to allegations of foreign associations, including with Pakistan’s ISI. He described the allegations as “a matter of grave national concern” and said continuing in the party would amount to compromising his conscience and principles.

Boruah, who has served the Congress for more than 16 years in multiple key organisational roles, said his political journey began as an NSUI office bearer and later included positions such as APCC General Secretary, Senior Spokesperson, AICC member, Chairman of the Research and Education Departments of APCC, and Co-Chairman of the party’s 2024 Lok Sabha election War Room. He stated that he discharged these responsibilities even while pursuing his PhD and during some of the party’s most difficult phases.

“I come from a freedom fighter family. My grandfather was recognised as a freedom fighter by both the Central and State governments, and my father dedicated his entire life to the Congress. This decision causes me immense personal pain, but the nation comes first, and the party must follow,” Boruah wrote.

He further accused the current APCC leadership of being disconnected from grassroots realities, indifferent to people’s issues, and showing disregard for organisational discipline and the party constitution. Boruah said he had known Gogoi since his Gauhati University days but asserted that Gogoi’s present conduct, attitude, and reported associations compelled him to draw a “firm moral line.”

“With a heavy yet resolute heart, I hereby submit my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress, effective today,” Boruah stated, adding that future generations would not forgive him if he betrayed his conscience.

Earlier today, APCC President and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a blistering counterattack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of political desperation and fabricating allegations over alleged Pakistan links.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan today, Gogoi said the controversy around the SIT report and the Chief Minister’s recent marathon press briefing only exposed the BJP government’s nervousness as Congress regains political momentum in the state.

Gogoi claimed that the Chief Minister had initially been reluctant to make the SIT report public, but was eventually forced to do so due to mounting political pressure. He alleged that the report contained no substantive evidence to back the accusations levelled against him, and described the entire episode as a “super flop.”
