Tension gripped parts of Dima Hasao district in Assam late Monday night after one person was killed in a police firing incident in the Jinam Valley area.

The incident took place around 9 PM during a routine patrol near Chillei village, a remote border region.

According to police sources, the patrol team was conducting regular operations when an unidentified individual allegedly opened fire on them. The police immediately retaliated in self-defence, leading to the death of the person on the spot.

Sources have indicated that the deceased is suspected to have links with a militant or insurgent group operating in the region. However, the identity and affiliations of the individual have not yet been officially confirmed.

In the wake of the incident, additional police forces were deployed in the surrounding areas as a precautionary measure.

A thorough search operation was underway to ensure no other armed individuals were present in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, local residents gathered near the site demanding a probe into the incident, raising slogans such as “We want justice” and “No Justice, No Rest.”

Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
