Baruah had been undergoing treatment for the past few days and breathed his last around 9:30 pm, according to family sources. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. The cremation is expected to take place on Monday in Guwahati.A recipient of the Padma Shri award, Baruah was born in Dibrugarh in 1932. He helmed North East India's oldest English daily, The Assam Tribune, for decades.The newspaper, founded by his father Radha Govinda Baruah in 1939, remains one of the region's most influential publications.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound grief over Baruah's demise. In a post on X, Sarma described him as a "towering figure in Assam’s journalistic landscape" and praised his "lifelong dedication to principled journalism" as well as his significant contributions to literature, education, and public life.
