Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate in the hearts of Assamese people forever.

On that fateful day, news of Zubeen’s sudden illness in Singapore shook the state. Initial reports confirmed that the singer had been admitted to the ICU in critical condition. Hours later, the devastating news arrived: Zubeen Garg, the voice that breathed life into Assamese music, was no more.

At the age of 52, he took his final breath by the sea.

Zubeen Garg’s body was brought back to Assam in a coffin, silencing the vibrant spirit that once lit up stages with his infectious smile and soul-stirring performances.

Thousands of fans, friends, and family gathered, hoping to awaken the artist who enchanted them with Mayabini, but the silence was deafening.

Today, the Assam government has made elaborate arrangements for Zubeen Garg’s final rites, ensuring a farewell befitting a cultural icon. The last rites will be performed with full state honours.

Zubeen’s sister, Palmi Baruah, will perform the mukhagni (lighting of the pyre), assisted by Rahul Gautam Sharma and Arun Garg.

As Zubeen merges with the five elements (panchabhuta), the question lingers: Can Assam ever forget its beloved artist?

His music, a reflection of the state’s emotions and aspirations, will continue to echo in the hearts of the Assamese people. For a community that has spent sleepless nights grieving his loss, bidding farewell to Zubeen seems impossible.
