Narayan Saikia, the victim journalist, was covering a story about Diwali celebrations in Fancy Bazar when the incident occurred.AdvertismentAccording to reports, a section of people were seen celebrating Diwali by drinking and bursting crackers in the area, defying an appeal by fans of legendary singer Zubeen Garg to light earthen lamps instead of fireworks. Saikia was allegedly assaulted by a group of non-Assamese youths while he was live on air, covering the Diwali celebrations.The attackers, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, beat up Saikia, causing injuries and bleeding. The journalist was later seen filing a complaint at the Pan Bazar police station, accompanied by several fellow journalists.The Pan Bazar police have initiated an investigation into the incident, but the accused youths are yet to be apprehended. "We condemn the attack on our journalist and demand immediate action against the perpetrators," said several fellow journalists, "We urge the authorities to ensure the safety and security of journalists while performing their duties."
