The key arterial road was shut to facilitate the ongoing construction and integration of the new GNB Road flyover with the existing Chandmari Flyover. Officials have confirmed that the route will remain closed for several days, leading to major disruptions in daily traffic movement.

Confirming the development, the Guwahati District Commissioner said the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and to ensure the smooth and timely completion of the flyover project. The traffic restriction came into effect from January 30, 2026, and will continue until construction work is completed.

As vehicular movement on the Chandmari Flyover has been completely restricted, commuters have been advised to strictly follow alternative routes to avoid further congestion. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) issued a detailed traffic advisory outlining diversion plans for private, passenger, and goods-carrying vehicles.

According to the advisory, vehicles approaching from the Zoo Road side should use Apurba Sinha Path or Rajgarh Road. From Rajgarh Road, commuters may proceed via South Sarania Road, G.S. Road, Dr. B. Baruah Road and then access GNB Road.

Vehicles coming from the Chandmari side have been directed to move towards Bamunimaidam via M.R.D. Road. From M.R.D. Road, traffic can be diverted through Hatigarh Chariali via Railway Colony Road or take the Noonmati–Mathgharia route.

Special arrangements have also been made for city buses, EV buses, and goods-carrying vehicles. Buses coming from Adabari through GNB and MRD Road will operate up to the Patharquarry roundabout. Similarly, buses from the Ganeshguri side will move towards Adabari via Zoo Road Tiniali, Mother Teresa Road, Mathgharia and Maniram Dewan Road.

Metro Share Taxis (Magic) operating from Noonmati will ply up to Chandmari Police Point, take a U-turn at MRD Road, and return towards Noonmati, functioning as shuttle services during the restriction period.

Traffic police have also instructed all city buses to maintain strict lane discipline, operate only on the left-most lane, and avoid overtaking to prevent bottlenecks in the Chandmari area.

Officials said the decision was taken during a special Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting held on January 29, chaired by the District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, with all stakeholders present.

With congestion already mounting in several parts of the city, commuters have been urged to plan their travel in advance and cooperate with traffic personnel until normal movement is restored.
