Global Mourning and Protests Erupt After Death of Ayatollah Khamenei

Large-scale mourning and protests erupted across Iran and other countries after Khamenei’s death, with symbolic gestures, clashes, and violence reported in parts of Pakistan.

Widespread mourning and demonstrations have swept across several countries following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Shia communities gathered in grief while some protests escalated into unrest.

In Tehran and other major Iranian cities, vast crowds poured onto the streets to pay their respects to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. Reports described millions participating in funeral processions and prayer assemblies, with particularly large gatherings witnessed in Isfahan and Zanjan.

In a powerful symbolic act, a red flag was hoisted atop the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque. In Shia tradition, the red banner signifies a call for justice and is often associated with martyrdom and retribution, underscoring the emotional intensity surrounding the moment.

Beyond Iran’s borders, solidarity gatherings were reported in several countries with significant Shia populations. In Baghdad, mourners assembled in public squares and religious sites to express their sorrow.

In India, people gathered outside the Iran Cultural House in Delhi, where a memorial meeting had been planned to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, members of the Shia community in Jammu and Kashmir staged a protest outside the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan in Srinagar, voicing their sentiments amid heightened emotions.

In Pakistan, demonstrations reportedly turned violent in certain areas. Thousands gathered in Skardu, where a United Nations office was set ablaze during unrest. In Karachi, protesters advanced toward the US consulate, leading to clashes with security personnel. According to reports, at least 10 people lost their lives after security forces opened fire during confrontations outside the diplomatic compound.
