The Israeli Defense Forces conducted a series of massive airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut late Thursday, hours after it declared that it would evacuate the populated locality and demanded that more than half a million people leave the city.

Israeli military had previously given an emergency warning to civilians in the southern areas of the Lebanese capital asking them to save their lives and immediately evacuate their homes. The order set off pandemonium within the city with families running away in panic, causing road and highway congestion and others trying to walk away.

Witnesses reported huge traffic jams in the entire city of Beirut, women pushing strollers and families trying to get their elderly parents out of the house, who could not walk without support. The zone under the evacuation order had hospitals and a number of government offices.

Soon after the warning Israeli fighter jets attacked targets in the suburb of Dahiya, which is supposed to be a stronghold of the Hezbollah. The puffs of smoke that were witnessed flying over the neighbourhood after the bombardment were thick. Israel claimed that the attacks were directed to Hezbollah infrastructure and military sites.

The attack is an acute aggravation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah into the conflict that grew this week when the Lebanese militant group fired missiles and drones against Israel.

A sharp comment came after the strikes by the Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who said that the Beirut suburb may end up being like the Khan Younis in the southern Gaza, an area that has been devastated massively in Israel continuing military campaign in the region.

Tensions in the Region Escalate

As the conflict expanded, Iran made retaliation airstrikes on Israeli targets and a number of US military installations in the Middle East, creating the danger of a larger conflict in the region.

The US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth cautioned that the war might escalate even greater. “Just leave it to me, he said, wait till you think you have seen something.”

At the White House, US President Donald Trump announced that the individuals of the influential Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran would be granted immunity in case they laid down their weapons, but those who declined would meet with certain death.

Another controversial aspect is the fact that Trump mentions that the US should have a say in who will assume the leadership role in Iran after the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei who was allegedly killed in a US-Israeli airstrike at the outset of the war.

The US President has discredited the potential of the son of Khamenei Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed him as president terming such a succession as unacceptable.

War Spreads Over The Region

The retaliatory campaign has been developed by Iran with ballistic missiles being launched to Israel and targets being hit in the region. They have been reported to fire missiles and drones to various countries that have US military installations.

It was reported that an airport in Azerbaijan was hit in the attacks with Gulf countries reporting that they had intercepted projectiles targeting American bases. Qatar affirmed a missile strike just outside Doha, Saudi Arabia declared it shot down an oncoming drone, and the United Arab Emirates declared casualties where the debris of a downed drone landed in Al Dhafra airbase.

In the meantime, Iranian drones and missiles have also led to disturbances in the regional airspace as several countries have been forced to close flight paths, creating a mass disturbance in travelling. The oil prices shot up as increasing apprehensions of a long-lasting instability in the Middle East were raised.

Escalation in Lebanon

It is estimated that the evacuation order was one of the largest orders announced in the city of Beirut. Such a blanket order had not been declared even in the midst of the severe conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024.

The health ministry of Lebanon said that over 100 people were killed and hundreds injured by Israeli attacks since the war broke out. The sixth day war has already brought tremendous casualties throughout the region including Iran and Israel.
