Nepal Protests Turn Deadly, 16 Dead, Dozens Injured as Gen Z Youth Clash with Police Over Corruption

KATHMANDU: The protest in Nepal has turned into a national tragedy, Death toll rising to 16 and almost 87 people injured in violent clashes that too with security forces.

The unrest, primarily driven by the country's Gen Z population, its triggered by the government's recent decision that is about to ban several social media platforms.

Thousands of students & young people, many still in their school or college uniforms, marched toward the Parliament building on Monday, carrying national flags and placards. Their protest was a direct response to the government's ban on platforms like Facebook, which authorities say failed to register with local regulations.

The youths attempted to break police barricades and also enter the Parliament premises, and the situation escalated. Security forces resorted to using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, leading to a brutal confrontation. Media reports indicate that at least 16 of the injured died from the firing, with dozens more sustaining wounds according to sources.

Curfew has been imposed around the Parliament building to control the violence. The protests, initially focused on the social media ban, also highlighted broader youth frustration with government corruption. With the situation volatile, an alert has been issued along the India-Nepal border to prevent any spillover of the unrest.
