Jorhat: Fake birth certificate scam uncovered in Teok village

A young man from Selenghat Kukurachora, surnamed Baruah, was caught by villagers and handed over to the Teok Police Station for allegedly creating a fake birth certificate.

The trouble began when a family hired Baruah to correct a mistake on their child's birth certificate. The original certificate had the mother's name printed wrong. Baruah took ₹600 for the correction but provided a certificate with false information, where the birthplace of the child was shown to be Jorhat Medical College instead of Teok FRU.

When locals discovered the discrepancy, they questioned Baruah. He tore up the certificate and tried to defend himself, but the villagers didn't believe him. They handed him over to the police.

The incident has raised concerns that Baruah may have been involved in similar scams. Villagers suspect a larger network of fraud might be operating through Aadhaar enrollment centers and are demanding a thorough police investigation.
