In 1922, Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin officially declared March 8 as International Women’s Day to recognise the role of women in the Russian Revolution, but the day received worldwide recognition in 1975, when the United Nations began officially celebrating International Women’s Day and encouraged countries to observe it as a day for women’s rights and global peace.
