Meghalaya: Congress High Command to Decide on Mukul Sangma's Potential Return, Says MPCC Chief

Shillong: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H Pala stated that any decision on former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s possible rejoining the Congress will be made solely by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), not at the state level.

Addressing the media, Pala claimed that the issue falls outside his authority as the state unit head. He confirmed that no formal talks have taken place regarding Sangma’s return.

Drawing a parallel with Zenith M Sangma’s recent re-induction, Pala claimed that it required months of state-level deliberations followed by final approval from the party’s central leadership in Delhi.

While extending a general welcome to those wishing to rejoin, Pala added that Sangma’s case is unique due to his prominence as a former Chief Minister and senior leader.

“When he departed, he was resolute about not coming back. So far, no discussions have been initiated to bring him back,” Pala remarked.

He clarified that Sangma’s return would need the AICC president’s consent, along with input from party leaders and grassroots workers, particularly in the Garo Hills.

On a personal level, Pala said he would warmly welcome the former Chief Minister if he chooses to return, stressing there is no animosity between them. “He informed me that his exit decision predated my tenure as MPCC president. We enjoyed a strong professional rapport even before entering politics,” he added.

Pala hailed Zenith Sangma’s comeback as a boost for the party, noting his past roles as AICC secretary and Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress president have reinvigorated cadre morale.

The MPCC is actively rebuilding its base by reacquiring veteran leaders and onboarding fresh talent. “Multiple former MLAs are in line to rejoin; we will induct them in stages,” Pala disclosed, signalling more Garo Hills leaders may follow soon.

Meanwhile, Tura Lok Sabha MP Saleng A Sangma on Wednesday dismissed prospects of Mukul Sangma’s return, stating the ex-Chief Minister has “categorically ruled it out.”
