On Wednesday, the state government held a review meeting with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and district commissioners to assess the project’s progress, which aims to strengthen connectivity across Northeastern states.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, overseeing the Public Works Department (Roads), reported that the survey is nearly complete in the Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and West Jaintia Hills districts. However, progress in East Jaintia Hills has been hampered by challenging terrain and monsoon conditions, with engineers occasionally required to trek for two to three hours to access remote sites.

Despite these obstacles, Tynsong expressed confidence, stating, “We are hopeful that the survey for East Jaintia Hills will also wrap up by December.”

Valued at Rs 22,864 crore, the project spans 144.8 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam. Tynsong further highlighted the advancement of the Shillong-Dawki Road Project, noting that packages 1, 2, 4, and 5 are moving forward smoothly. Addressing public inconvenience caused by the ongoing four-lane construction, he announced that the government has instructed NHIDCL to prioritise the completion of Package 1 by December 2025.

Work on packages 2, 4, and 5 is progressing well, with an anticipated completion date of December 2026.Dy
