Meghalaya CM Assures Heightened Vigilance Along Bangladesh Border, Says Most Fencing Complete

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that the state's 443-km international border with Bangladesh has remained under strict surveillance, with all relevant agencies maintaining a high state of alert.

He said that although the border management is primarily the responsibility of the central government and the Border Security Force (BSF), the state government has also taken every possible precautionary step within its purview.

"The Government of Meghalaya, the BSF, and all concerned agencies are extremely alert", he stated.

Sangma added that a high-level internal security review meeting was convened on December 24, 2025, involving officials from the BSF, Intelligence Bureau, and other key stakeholders to evaluate the prevailing situation. No details were made public owing to the sensitive nature of internal security issues, but continuous monitoring has been in place ever since.

He clarified that there are currently no major incidents or reasons for alarm, while stating that the importance of ongoing vigilance to prevent any potential threats was needed.

Regarding physical infrastructure, Sangma said that border fencing has been completed along the majority of the stretch, with only 30-40 km remaining unfenced in isolated pockets, primarily in West Jaintia Hills and parts of South Garo Hills districts.

Delays have arisen due to challenges such as land acquisition difficulties, local opposition, and pending court cases. However, a comprehensive review conducted four months ago helped resolve many of these obstacles, he added.

The Central government is closely overseeing the progress, and Sangma said he is in regular communication with officials in Delhi.

"We are pursuing this very aggressively, and I am hopeful that the remaining work will be completed soon," he added.
