Meghalaya: Truck Accident in Ri-Bhoi Claims Four Teenage Lives

The incident occurred between 6 and 7 p.m. when a truck loaded with sawdust, registered as ML05AC8447, hit five pedestrians walking along the roadside.

Three of the victims died instantly at the scene, while a fourth passed away the following morning at a hospital in Shillong. The deceased were identified as Phibapyntngen Rynjah (13), Lashimti Nongrum (13), Theresa Nongrum (19), and Ridahunlang Nongrum (13).

The sole survivor, Iupharisa Nongrum (11), sustained severe injuries. All victims were residents of Thadrang Madan village, under the Mawlasnai Police Outpost.

Preliminary reports indicate the truck was travelling from Jowai to Bhoirymbong, driven by Ferlindes Rymbai (34) from Laitkor, East Khasi Hills, with Dwayne Dkhar (31) from Khliehtyrshi, West Jaintia Hills, as his companion. Both the driver and his companion were injured when the truck overturned after the collision.

Police have registered a case, seized the vehicle, and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

The truck will be thoroughly investigated to check if it was fit to be driven on the roads. Police will also check if it was overloaded.
