BREAKING: Supreme Court Halts FIRs Against ED Officers, Major Blow to Mamata Banerjee

In a major setback for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the Supreme Court has suspended proceedings on FIRs lodged by Kolkata Police against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials following their raid on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office. It is a key consultant for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.

This ruling by the Supreme Court represents a significant reversal for the Mamata Banerjee administration amid claims of obstruction during the probe.

Following the Court proceedings, a bench led by Justices Prashant Mishra and Vipul Pancholi issued notices to the Home Ministry, Department of Personnel and Training, Mamata Banerjee, and the West Bengal government, requesting responses to the ED’s plea for suspending state DGP Rajiv Kumar and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma. 

The court also called for replies on a proposed CBI investigation, observing prima facie serious issues with state interference in central agency operations and questioning how such actions could impede probes into grave offences. Justices highlighted concerns over disorder in the Calcutta High Court during related hearings, with the next session set for 3 February.

It may be mentioned that, the ED probe centres on allegations that Trinamool Congress transported Rs 20 crore in undeclared cash to Panjim during the Goa elections via six individuals, scrutinising I-PAC founder Pratik Jain’s involvement. Officials claim Mamata Banerjee directly hindered the investigation by intervening during the I-PAC office search. No seizures occurred, but critical files were reportedly blocked, escalating tensions ahead of the 2026 Bengal polls.
