New Delhi: In yet another incident of racial abuse against northeasterners in the national capital, three women hailing from Arunachal Pradesh have accused their neighbours in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar of racially abusing and humiliating them over a minor dispute that began with repair work in their rented flat.

According to reports, a minor altercation around February 20 escalated into a confrontation in which the neighbours allegedly hurled derogatory and racially charged comments at the women. The comments have since been widely shared online after a video of the exchange went viral on multiple social media platforms.

According to police, the dispute started when drilling and electrical work in the women’s fourth-floor apartment caused dust and debris to fall onto the floor below, prompting complaints from their neighbours, Harsh Singh and his wife. What might have been a routine neighbourly disagreement quickly deteriorated.

In the viral clip, the accused woman can reportedly be heard asking one of the Arunachal women: “Were you sitting here to do business? Have you opened a massage parlour at home?”- a slur implying involvement in sex work.

She also allegedly said things like “go, work at a massage parlour for ₹500” and made other offensive comments, including calling them “dhandhewali” (a derogatory term) and urging them to “go and sell momos”.

The victims responded in the recording, defending themselves: “Everyone heard what you said about my image. You made false allegations that I drink alcohol. Go check my room if you find any bottles there.” They have said the comments were not just hurtful to them personally but also attacked the dignity of people from the entire northeastern community living in cities like Delhi.

In the meantime, the police registered a case at Malviya Nagar police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to intimidation, outraging a woman’s modesty, and promoting enmity on grounds of race, place of birth, language, etc. No physical injuries were reported, but the women told authorities they experienced mental harassment and humiliation after the incident.

The case has reignited discussion about the racial and regional prejudice that people from India’s northeastern states often encounter outside their home regions. Advocates and civil society members say such episodes reflect deeper issues of stereotyping and intolerance.
