Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday mounted a sharp political offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), branding it the “Bhrast Janata Party” and accusing its “double-engine governments” of destroying lives through corruption, misuse of power and what he described as an entrenched culture of arrogance.

In a X post in Hindi, Gandhi said that across the country, BJP-ruled States have witnessed a steady erosion of justice, accountability and public welfare. He cited a string of incidents from different parts of India to argue that ordinary citizens particularly the poor, workers and the middle class are being reduced to “statistics” in a system driven by extortion in the name of development.

Referring to the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand, Gandhi said the case had shaken the nation but raised a pointed question about those in power. “Who is the BJP VIP being protected?” he asked, demanding to know when the law would be applied equally.

He also invoked the Unnao rape case in Uttar Pradesh, saying it exposed how political influence was used to shield the guilty and how much the victim had to suffer in the struggle for justice. “The country saw what happens when arrogance of power replaces the rule of law,” he said.

Gandhi broadened his attack to public health and governance, alleging that deaths caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore and complaints of polluted supply in States such as Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi reflected deep administrative failure. According to him, even access to safe water, a basic necessity has become a source of fear for citizens.

On environmental issues, the Congress leader accused the BJP of allowing corporate greed to override laws and safeguards. From the Aravalli hills in Rajasthan to other ecologically sensitive regions, he alleged that mountains were being cut, forests destroyed and natural resources exploited, leaving people with pollution, dust and recurring disasters.

He also referred to incidents in public institutions, including deaths of children allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrup, reports of newborns being attacked by rats in government hospitals, and collapsing school buildings. “This is not mere negligence,” he said, calling it the direct outcome of corruption embedded in governance.

“Bridges fall, roads cave in, train accidents wipe out families and every time the response is the same: photographs, tweets and the ritual of compensation,” Gandhi said, accusing the government of replacing accountability with optics.

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “double-engine” slogan, Gandhi said the model works only for a handful of billionaires. “For the common Indian, this is not the speed of development. It is the speed of destruction -crushing lives every single day,” he said, using the hashtag “Bhrast Janata Party”.
