Assam: Digboi Hosts 21st Edition of Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament

GUWAHATI: The Indian Army on Wednesday inaugurated the 21st Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament at Digboi in a solemn yet inspiring ceremony, paying tribute to the life and sacrifice of Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra, a brave son of Assam and a hero of the Kargil War.

One of the most evocative moments of the opening ceremony was the ceremonial presentation of the Torch of Sportsmanship, symbolising courage, discipline and the timeless spirit of fair play. The atmosphere was further elevated by a stirring performance from the Jazz Band of the Assam Rifles, which infused the event with patriotic fervour and energy.

The ceremony was graced by Rahul Prashant, Executive Director and Refinery Head of Digboi Refinery, who attended as the Chief Guest and formally declared the tournament open. Addressing the gathering, he lauded the Indian Army’s consistent efforts to promote sports among young people while honouring the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes through meaningful initiatives such as this tournament.

Over the years, the Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament has grown into a significant sporting platform in the region. Beyond competition, it encourages teamwork, perseverance and a sense of national pride among the youth. The tournament also plays an important role in strengthening civil–military relations, reflecting the Indian Army’s commitment to community engagement through sports.
