GUWAHATI: India made history when they won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating New Zealand in the final match which marked their third victory in the tournament's history.

The T20 World Cup victory which Team India achieved in 2024 marked their second consecutive win in the tournament.

India batted first in the final match to achieve a challenging target of 256 runs by scoring 255 runs for 7 wickets in their 20 overs. New Zealand needed to score runs at a specific pace but their batsmen kept getting out at regular intervals. India achieved a 96-run victory because New Zealand could only score 159 runs which secured their historic championship win.

Assam participated in the festive activities. The Tricolour was carried by thousands of enthusiastic fans who took to the streets in Guwahati to celebrate the team’s historic achievement. Firecrackers were burst by supporters in Ganeshguri while they congratulated Team India which created a festive atmosphere throughout the city.

More celebrations occurred throughout different areas of the state. The cultural celebrations at Bokakhat's town center became a festive event when cricket lovers burst firecrackers while chanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" which many described as an "untimely Diwali."

Ajay Sarma former joint secretary of the Assam Cricket Board declared India’s victory as a historic achievement while he praised the team's batting and bowling performance during the crucial knockout stages of the tournament. He noted that India's performance was weak during Super 8 but the team achieved excellent results during the semi-final and final matches which led them to win the championship.

Gar-Ali in Jorhat witnessed festive celebrations as cricket fans celebrated the victory of their team. Kharupetia supporters held celebratory processions through the streets while playing music with their band to mark the special day. The residents of Silchar celebrated by bursting firecrackers throughout their neighborhoods which created a festive atmosphere in the city as fans celebrated India’s third T20 World Cup victory.

India had previously won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2024 which makes their 2026 victory another historic achievement for the country.
