Mirabai Chanu Secures Silver at World Championships with 199kg Lift in 48kg Category

Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu added another accolade to her illustrious career by clinching a silver medal in the 48kg category at the World Championships.

The 2017 world champion and 2022 silver-medalist delivered a total lift of 199kg (84kg snatch + 115kg clean and jerk), marking her third podium finish at the prestigious event after transitioning from the 49kg division.

Chanu faced challenges in the snatch, failing twice at 87kg, but excelled in the clean and jerk, nailing all three attempts at 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg—the latter matching her Tokyo Olympics 2021 performance, where she also won silver. A former world record holder in clean and jerk, Chanu showcased her resilience and precision.

Chief coach Vijay Sharma had set a goal of surpassing the 200kg mark, aiming to replicate Chanu’s 49kg lifts in the lighter category, according to PTI. While she fell just short of 200kg, her performance was commendable.

North Korea’s Ri Song Gum claimed gold with a dominant 213kg total (91kg snatch + 122kg clean and jerk), setting new world records in both total and clean and jerk with her final lifts of 120kg and 122kg. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took bronze with 198kg (88kg snatch + 110kg clean and jerk).
