Assam: Two senior officials resign from Tezpur University amid allegations against Vice Chancellor

Tezpur University has been rocked by controversy after two senior officials — Acting Registrar Pritam Dev and Dean of the School of Engineering, Shankar Chandra Deka —submitted their resignations on Wednesday night. Their decision comes amid mounting tension and widespread protests by students, teachers, and staff members against the university’s Vice Chancellor, Shambhunath Singh after his controversial remarks on the legend Zubeen Garg.

According to reports, both Dev and Deka submitted formal applications to Acting Vice Chancellor Raja Rafiul Haque, seeking relief from their official responsibilities. Their resignations were subsequently accepted by Haque.

In a significant development, after stepping down, the two officials openly voiced serious allegations against Vice Chancellor Singh. In a written statement addressed to student representatives, faculty members, and non-teaching staff, Acting Registrar Pritam Dev, Dean Shankar Chandra Deka, and Acting Vice Chancellor Raja Rafiul Haque claimed that they had been compelled to take part in “unethical activities” under pressure from the Vice Chancellor.

They stated that they acted against their own conscience out of fear of repercussions, revealing the extent of internal conflict and alleged misuse of authority within the university administration.

The situation escalated on Wednesday night as large numbers of students, teachers, and staff gathered on campus, demanding accountability and immediate action against the Vice Chancellor. Amid the uproar and sustained protests, both Dev and Deka provided written confessions admitting their role and announced their resignations.

The latest resignations have added to the growing turmoil within Tezpur University, which has been facing administrative unrest and accusations of mismanagement in recent weeks. The university community has called for an impartial investigation into the allegations made against Vice Chancellor Shambhunath Singh.

Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the charges or the ongoing protest situation on campus.
