A violent incident erupted on Friday in Rajghat area under the Dholai Assembly constituency of Cachar district following a strict anti-drug decision taken by the local mosque committee. At least 12 people, including worshippers and mosque committee members, were injured after alleged drug dealers launched a sudden attack inside the mosque premises immediately after Jummah prayers.

According to sources, the incident is linked to a recent decision by the South Dholai Mosque Coordination Committee, under whose directive the Rajghat mosque committee had imposed social sanctions against families of several identified drug traffickers. The move, aimed at curbing the spread of narcotics in the area, reportedly angered a drug network and its associates.

The Dholai Mosque Coordination Committee oversees a total of 72 mosques across the region. As part of its anti-drug initiative, the committee had announced several strict measures, including social boycott of drug traffickers, non-participation in their funeral (janaza) prayers, and the enforcement of multiple social restrictions.

In protest against these measures, a group of alleged drug dealers reportedly entered the mosque premises after prayers on Friday and attacked worshippers and mosque committee members. The situation quickly escalated, creating panic and tension throughout the locality.

Following the incident, Dholai Police Station registered a case and identified 11 individuals in connection with the attack. The injured were taken for medical treatment, while security has been tightened in the area to prevent further unrest.

Local residents have expressed strong concern over the incident and, through the media, have demanded swift and strict action against those responsible. Villagers have also appealed for the intervention of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure justice and restore peace in the region.
