Top StoriesAssam's healthcare system exposed: Balipara PHC struggles with single doctor, empty Superintendent postDespite the government's claims of improving healthcare, the reality on the ground is concerning. The Balipara Block Primary Health Centre in Sonitpur district is a prime example, highlighting the struggles of Assam's healthcare system.Nidarshana Sarma Nov 21, 2025 13:35 ISTAt a time when the government continues to publicize major improvements in the state’s health infrastructure, the ground reality paints a starkly different picture. The condition of the Balipara Block Primary Health Centre (PHC) under the Chariduar Revenue Circle in Sonitpur district reflects the vulnerable state of Assam’s healthcare sector.AdvertismentThe lone PHC, which caters to thousands of people in the region, is currently being run by just one doctor — a retired physician who continues to serve under the National Health Mission (NHM). With no superintendent in place, the hospital is struggling to function smoothly. Despite being the only medical facility for the entire area, it now depends solely on this single doctor for daily operations.Adding to the crisis, five other doctors are deployed at the PHC only during emergencies and are brought in from nearby sub-health centres, leaving routine services severely understaffed. The superintendent’s post has reportedly remained vacant for over one and a half years, and the superintendent of the 30-bed Chariduar hospital has been handed the additional responsibility, further stretching available resources. In a situation that raises even more concern, the PHC does not have a single cleaning staff. With nearly a hundred patients arriving at the hospital every day, the lack of manpower has forced the facility to operate with makeshift arrangements. As a result, patients often face long waiting hours and delays in receiving treatment.Local residents have expressed growing frustration over the deteriorating condition of the health facility, stating that despite being the only accessible healthcare centre, it has become increasingly difficult for the public to receive timely medical care. Also Read: Earthquake Tremors Sweep Through Assam and Kolkata as 5.7 Quake Rocks BangladeshAdvertismentAdvertisment Read the Next Article
