"Guwahati has emerged as a hub for an alarming counterfeit currency racket that is allegedly operating openly through social media platforms, raising serious concerns about law enforcement and digital surveillance.Advertisment According to information available, the illegal trade in fake currency is being conducted brazenly on Instagram, where videos displaying counterfeit notes are uploaded along with contact phone numbers. Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out directly, following which the racketeers reportedly arrange the supply of fake currency. The racket is said to be operating through an Instagram account identified as anshu_sharmaji8. Sources claim that when the phone number mentioned on the account is contacted, members of the gang initially offer counterfeit currency free of cost to gain trust. However, once the fake notes are circulated in the market, buyers are allegedly compelled to make repeat purchases. The pricing structure of the racket further highlights the scale of the operation. For an amount of ₹2 lakh, buyers can reportedly procure counterfeit currency worth ₹5 lakh, making it a lucrative proposition for those willing to engage in illegal activities. Investigations suggest that the network is not confined to Guwahati alone but extends to various parts of the state, indicating a well-organised and widespread operation. Despite the open nature of these activities on a public social media platform, the racket continues to function without apparent hindrance. The incident has sparked concern over the misuse of social media for criminal activities and has underscored the urgent need for stricter monitoring and swift action by authorities to curb the circulation of counterfeit currency, which poses a serious threat to the economy and public trust.
