Speaking at an event, Sonowal said that while lighthouses have historically guided ships through turbulent seas, similar structures will now be introduced along major river routes as well. According to him, four lighthouses will be set up along the Brahmaputra, which will serve both navigational and tourism purposes.

The Union Minister explained that the proposed lighthouses will not only help ships and vessels navigate the river safely but will also act as tourist attractions. He added that these structures will highlight and preserve the unique culture and traditions of Assam, thereby creating new opportunities for employment in the region.

Sonowal further said that the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s maritime and inland waterways infrastructure. He noted that India aims to become one of the top 10 shipbuilding nations in the world by 2030, while the country is also moving towards becoming the third-largest economy globally.
