“Most Cowardly Politician”: Gaurav Gogoi Dares CM Himanta to Prove Loyalty to BJP Without Power

Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, describing him as “the most cowardly politician in Assam’s history” and questioning his commitment and loyalty to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing the media, Gogoi challenged the Chief Minister to publicly declare that he would remain in the BJP even if the party were to lose power. “Does he have the courage to say that he will stay with the BJP when it is no longer in power?” Gogoi asked, contrasting Sarma’s political journey with what he described as the Congress party’s tradition of loyalty and responsibility.

“The loyalty and responsibility we have towards the Congress cannot be shaken by power or position,” Gogoi said. “Irrespective of whether the Congress is in power or not, we will never betray the party. But he will,” he added, alleging that Sarma’s politics is driven solely by power.

The Assam Congress chief further accused Sarma of projecting himself as an all-powerful leader, claiming that this image would collapse without the support of the state machinery. “Let the policemen be removed for just a second, and you will see his cowardice,” Gogoi remarked.

Highlighting Sarma’s political past, Gogoi pointed out that the Chief Minister had switched affiliations multiple times. “He left AASU for the Congress, then left the Congress for the BJP. The moment he senses danger, he will jump to another party,” Gogoi alleged. He once again challenged Sarma to commit to staying with the BJP regardless of electoral outcomes.

Drawing a comparison, Gogoi said Congress leaders have stood firm despite facing allegations and legal cases. “Look at us—me, Rokibul Hussain, or any Congress leader. No matter how many allegations or cases are slapped on us, we will not leave the Congress. We will stay loyal, no matter what,” he asserted.

Questioning the Chief Minister’s political strength, Gogoi claimed that Sarma’s influence is exaggerated. “He is not as powerful as the media portrays him to be. The day the BJP loses power, he will walk away,” he said.
