Northeast’s First Private Railway Terminal : Guess the location!

In a landmark development for industrial logistics in Northeast India, young Assamese entrepreneur Kanak Deka has established a private rail corridor connecting his business operations to the BRTL Private Railway Terminal in Kalazal, marking the first privately developed railway terminal in the region’s history.

Hailing from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, Deka’s initiative represents a significant boost to Assam’s growing logistics and industrial ecosystem. The project is expected to streamline freight movement and reduce transportation costs for industries operating across the Northeast, thereby opening a new chapter in regional infrastructure development.

The terminal was formally inaugurated by Kamalpur constituency MLA Diganta Kalita in the presence of senior officials from the Rangiya Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. With this milestone, the private railway station developed under Deka’s initiative has also been incorporated into the Indian Railways network map — a rare achievement for a privately owned logistics facility.

Developed under the PM Gati Shakti national master plan, the project spans nearly 300 bighas of land and carries an estimated investment of ₹245 crore. Beyond infrastructure expansion, the terminal is poised to generate employment opportunities for nearly 1,000 youths, contributing to local economic growth.

The facility is designed to serve as a major logistics hub for several leading multinational and domestic companies, including Tata, Mahindra, Sonalika, and Hindustan Unilever, enabling efficient cargo handling and supply chain integration within the region.

Notably, the project emerged from an agreement worth approximately ₹500 crore signed during the Advantage Assam 2 investment initiative, further reflecting increasing private sector confidence in Assam’s industrial potential.

The commissioning of the BRTL Private Railway Terminal is widely seen as a transformative step for freight connectivity in the Northeast, reinforcing Assam’s position as an emerging logistics gateway to the region.
